At the beginning of July 2026, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine announced the results of the competitive selection of PhD research projects within the framework of the experimental project for training doctoral degree candidates in project-based postgraduate studies. Project-based postgraduate studies is a new model for training doctors of philosophy, according to which a PhD candidate works not only on a dissertation but also on a specific research project with a defined goal, budget, work plan, and expected results. The aim is to strengthen the connection between postgraduate studies and real scientific tasks, the needs of the state, defense capability, economy, and the restoration of Ukraine. Projects were evaluated based on scientific quality, relevance, novelty, practical significance, potential for further use of results, impact on defense capability, and the development of Ukraine's economy.
23 out of 79 selected projects will be carried out in 12 institutions of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine:
- Institute of Physics of the NAS of Ukraine (5 projects);
- O.O. Bohomolets Institute of Physiology of the NAS of Ukraine (4 projects);
- L.V. Pysarzhevsky Institute of Physical Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine (3 projects);
- Research and Development Complex "Institute for Single Crystals" of the NAS of Ukraine (3 projects);
- V.E. Lashkaryov Institute of Semiconductor Physics of the NAS of Ukraine (1 project);
- G.V. Kurdyumov Institute for Metal Physics of the NAS of Ukraine (1 project);
- Institute of Geological Sciences of the NAS of Ukraine (1 project);
- Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute under the State Emergency Service of Ukraine and the NAS of Ukraine (1 project);
- V.I. Vernadsky Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine (1 project);
- O.V. Palladin Institute of Biochemistry of the NAS of Ukraine (1 project);
- Institute of Cell Biology of the NAS of Ukraine (1 project);
- Kyiv Academic University (1 project).
The projects cover various fields of natural sciences and involve research for the development of new materials and technologies, including medical and environmental ones, research in the interests of national security and defense, etc.
For conducting research on the selected PhD research projects, the institutions of the NAS of Ukraine will receive funding totaling over 10 million hryvnias in 2026. According to the Ministry, these funds may cover the salary of the potential candidate, the salary of the PhD project advisor, materials, equipment, and other expenses necessary for conducting the research.
