The President of the International Sociological Association, Belgian sociologist Jeffrey Players, published an article dedicated to the role of sociology during wartime and Ukraine's experience.
In the publication "What Sociology Can Do in Wartime: Resilience and Dynamism of Ukrainian Sociologists", the author analyzes how Ukrainian researchers – despite the full-scale war – continue systematic studies, documenting social transformations, civic resilience, democratic values, and war crimes.
Special attention in the article is given to the work of Ukrainian sociologists, particularly the research of the Institute of Sociology of the NAS of Ukraine, which continues annual monitoring of social changes. These studies make it possible to track the dynamics of Ukrainian society under war conditions.
The author emphasizes that even after the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022, Ukrainian sociologists did not stop their scientific work – despite shelling, displacement, and other challenges. As a result, a significant body of empirically grounded and theoretically comprehended research has been formed.
As Jeffrey Players notes, the support of continuous sociological surveys and research under such conditions is an achievement with few parallels in global practice.
The article also highlights the role of Ukrainian sociologists in studying key changes in society – from the transformation of identity and values to the study of war experience, forced migration, trauma, and civic resilience.
It is separately emphasized that it was precisely thanks to systematic research, particularly in institutions of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, that the continuity of social process analysis was preserved even during the period of full-scale war.
The publication is also an invitation to broader international dialogue and cooperation with Ukrainian scholars. As the author notes, the experience of Ukrainian sociology and the research results obtained under wartime conditions have significance far beyond Ukraine.
