Senior Researcher at the Institute of Nuclear Safety Problems of the NAS of Ukraine, Candidate of Biological Sciences Olena Pareniuk told the publication LB.ua about the development of a digital system for planning and prioritizing humanitarian demining in Ukraine.
It is about the GRIT platform, which helps analyze mined territories and determine priorities for their clearance. The project is being worked on by Ukrainian scientists and IT specialists in cooperation with the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, the Humanitarian Demining Center, Palantir Technologies, and with the support of UNDP.
According to Olena Pareniuk, the system allows analysis at the level of individual cadastral plots. It already contains over a hundred datasets from various sources – from satellite images to information about population density, land use, and ecological features of the territories. Based on this data, a priority index is formed, which helps determine which plots should be cleared first.
In 2026, using the GRIT system, a plan for humanitarian demining of 5,000 hectares of agricultural land in Kyiv, Mykolaiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Kherson, and Chernihiv regions was compiled for the first time.
The scientist emphasizes that the platform does not make decisions independently but is a support tool for government bodies and communities responsible for organizing demining work. It helps assess the complexity of clearing territories, their economic, social, and ecological potential, and form realistic work plans.
