The idea of the study is to develop a scientific basis for the obtaining of biological agents based on phage-encoded EPS depolymerases to control fire blight plant disease associated with E. amylovora, which persists in Ukraine. This approach is based on the natural ability of EPS depolymerases to hydrolyze the extracellular matrix, a major component of the bacterial cell capsule. Since the capsule is among the main factors of virulence, its destruction leads to a decrease in the bacterial resistance against external factors, loss of the ability of biofilm formation, as well as exposes the surface structures of the cell to the action of bacteriophages. Implementation of this idea allows evolving a scientific concept for EPS depolymerases of lytic bacteriophages that infect strains of E. amylovora specific to the territory of Ukraine, as well as to assess the prospects of their use as agents of biological control of this extremely harmful pathogen. The obtained results will lay the scientific foundations for the creation of a unique, environmentally safe, effective product for Ukraine, which will prevent the spread of infectious agent E. amylovora in the country and, consequently, avoid economic losses from associated diseases of fruit and ornamental trees.
