In Marine Hydrophysical Institute experimental researches of light propagation processes in the sea began from the basic works of V.V. Shuleikin in marine optics. Specially equipped physical laboratory was organized on the Crimean Southern coast to carry out systematic hydro-optical investigations. With the help of heliostat accurate measurements of seawater optical properties were done and correctness of V.V. Shuleikin conclusions on the theory of light propagation in the sea and the features of light scattering on large particles was proved.

International programs, projects, grants
Significant amount of works was done within the framework of many international programs and grants. These works began from the international grant ¹525-4003-03F0107A of the German federal Ministry of researches and technologies of two projects «The database of oceanologic researches» and «The program of measurements from an oceanographic platform» authorized by this ministry in support of joint investigations of Germany and CIS scientific research institutes. Both projects were developed from the international satellite program on remote determination of the ocean color "MOS-PRIRODA" in which Ì HI NAS of Ukraine participated for more than ten years.
At the same time investigations on the international project «Development of SeaWiFS algorithms with reference to researches of the Black Sea » began. The project passed through the competitive selection of National space agency of the United States of America. As a result MHI NAS of Ukraine was authorized as a foreign participant of the US program the «NASA NRA-92-OSSA-7». NASA support permitted to carry out a number of international sub-satellite experiments on the oceanographic platform and from board of research vessels of MHI NAS of Ukraine . Later joint sub-satellite experiments were been continued within the framework of another international grant NASA SIMBIOS, the project «Long-term sub-satellite observations of major bio-optical and aerosol parameters in the Black Sea ».
New methods and equipments for sub-satellite researches were developed within the framework of the joint international grant, USA , CRDF ¹ UG1-299 (Civilian Research and Development Foundation) together with Skripss institute of oceanography (SIO), the project «Sub-satellite hydro-optical devices for sub-satellite support of the space-measured data of SeaWiFS scanner and development of regional bio-optical algorithm for the Black Sea ».
New polar nephelometer with unique characteristics was developed with support of the Canadian firm "Satlantic" and Dallhous University within the framework of the international grant in the form of the partner contract ¹ E-012 of the Scientific-Technological Center of Ukraine (STCU), the project «Remote sensing of the ocean surface». Further these works were continued together with the American firm «AMPAC, Inc. (Aerospace mass properties analysis, Inc)», the international partner project ¹ E-131 of the Scientific - Technological Center of Ukraine (STCU), the project «Development of a new approach and device for measurements of seawater scattering function in a wide range of scattering angles».

Results

Within the framework of basic directions researches of optical features of water and regularities of distribution of light radiation were regularly carried out in many water areas of the World Ocean. Semi-empirical models describing relations between various hydro-optical and biological characteristics and their regional features were constructed. On the basis of these researches new optical classification of waters according to the color index value was developed.
Sub-satellite complex of hydro-optical devices whose capacity corresponds to the known in the world analogues is developed. A set of international sub-satellite experiments ion water areas of the Black and Mediterranean seas and in the Atlantic Ocean was performed using this instrument complex.
Optical condition of the atmosphere above the Black Sea was analyzed in details; spectrum of aerosol optical thickness of the atmosphere and its inter-annual variability were investigated. The obtained data on the atmosphere features above the Black Sea became s foundation of the proved choice of the correction method in determination of sea color from space.
Analytical methods for solving the inverse problems of bio-optics are developed. The permit to reconstruct spectral characteristics of absorption and scattering of light of seawater and also the concentration of the basic biological components of the sea suspension, such as phytoplankton pigments and the dissolved organic matter. The problem is solved for natural waters of many water areas of the Atlantic Ocean and the Black Sea including the most complex case of turbid coastal waters.
