Cruises

The Marine Hydrophysical Institute of the NASU hold an extensive and very valuable information on the species diversity and spatial-temporal variability of physical, chemical and biological characteristics from the World's Ocean.
Over 100 expeditions were deployed to the open ocean regions of the Atlantic, Indian, Pacific Ocean and seas of the Mediterranean basin from 1960 – 2000.

The unique benefits of the data from expeditions are:

Numerous physical and biological measurements cover huge area of the World’s Ocean.

The majority of the environmental parameters were measured simultaneously.

The majority of biological samples are already treated and large numbers of organisms have been identified by specialists

Data from many cruises represent field surveys conducted in a form of numerous macroscale regular grids of oceanographic stations.
The general strategy of field research in expeditions was detailed surveys of planktonic community and environment parameters conducted in a form of regular grids of stations.

CTD casts, nutrients, primary production, chlorophyll "a", micro-, meso- and macroplanktonic fractions of the community were sampled at many stations simultaneously. This provides one the opportunity to analyse data on species in relation with environment properties.
The evaluation and modern analysis of these data can fill the gap of our knowledge on biovariability required for the macroscale and the synoptic scale.

This should focus international attention on the biodiversity and biovariability of the World’s Ocean basin ecosystems necessary for future interpretation of anthropogenic impact and climate change.
