Antarctic Oceanographycal Research

First Ukrainian Antarctic station (UAS) "Academik Vernadsky" (65°15'S, 64°16'W). The UAS "Academik Vernadsky" (ex. "Faraday") is the oldest operational station in the Antarctic Peninsula area.
Galindez island, where the station is located, is a small island in the Argentine islands Archipelago. The nearest point on the mainland coast is some 5 km distant.
Ukrainian Antarctic Centre organized two marine Antarctic expeditions with R/V Ernst Krenkel in 1997-1998 and two ones with R/V Horizont in 2000 and 2002. The main aims of the marine Antarctic expeditions are to provide input of wintering personnel and materials, as well as to carry out the on route scientific researches. Natural marine ecosystems in Antarctica, a base of which is krill, geologic structures, ocean bottom relief, gravity and magnetic anomalies, water circulation, meteorological conditions and sea ice distribution are studied.

Results

Antarctic, device SHIKCorrelation between hydrodynamic, hydrophysic and hydrochemistry processes, their dependence on atmosphere processes changes and regional conditions are studied during marina expeditions. Studying of the hydrometeorology conditions on biology productive zones forming, the structure and variability of oceanographic fields in Atlantic sector of Antarctic, research of dynamic role and “iciness“ in resources potential formation are provided.

Working out and adaptation to regional conditions the models of hydrographic processes and diagnostic methods of state and forecasting the evolution of oceanographic fields, the methods of satellite monitoring and drift technology; study the structure and dynamics of water, ice variability; discovery of climate characteristics, ocean field peculiarities that develop an biologic productivity and business significance are fulfilled.

Establishment of correlation in hydro-optic characteristics, biology, and hydrology parameters, study of anthropogenic influences in the station region on hydro-optic characteristics of adjacent water are fulfilled.

The complex of experimental works in the fields of marina biology, oceanology, hydro-chemistry, industrial and acoustic oceanography were proposed. Most interesting directions of explorations are: krill, salpas, zooplankton and other factor of environment in the zones of high biological activity (the Patagonia shelf and shelf of the East Cost of Argentina, Scotia Sea. The research topics are: estimation of krill capacity in regions of industrial fishing, dynamics and structure of waters in that regions, explorations of the fronts and large-scale sea currents as factors of creation of the fields increased biological activity, the investigation of typical season changes of wind field over South-West Atlantic and correspondent changes in circulation of the waters for different seasons, investigation of acoustic properties of polar marina media.

Publications

Large-scale peculiarities of the temperature and salinity fields of the sea surface along the route of the Seventh Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition (Yu. Artamonov , A .Perov, Ukrainian Antarctic Journal, ¹1, 146-148 (2003), in Russian)
On the basis of the hydrological data received during the 7th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition in January-March, 2002, the large-scale peculiarities of the temperature and salinity fields of the sea surface in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean sea are described. Sea surface front peculiarities are discussed. Seasonal changes of hydrological parameters in the tropical and middle latitude of the Atlantic Ocean were determined.

Peculiarities of the hydrological and hydrochemical water structure in the region of Argentine Islands in February- March 2002 (Yu. Artamonov, A. Romanov, Yu. Vnukov, P. Lomakin, A. Perov, I. Stepura, Ukrainian Antarctic Journal,  ¹1, 17-24 (2003), in Russian)
The structure and variability of the thermohaline and hydrochemical elements and the characteristics of the currents in the region of Argentine Islands are analyzed on the basis of oceanographic observations during the 7th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition (February-March 2002). The results of the 7th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition and the results of previous Ukrainian expeditions to Antarctica are compared. It is shown that in summer season the ice fields have an impact on the water structure and currents.

Results of the Oceanographycal Research at the Western Bransfield Strait during March 2002 (Yu. Artamonov, A. Romanov, Yu. Vnucov, A . Perov, I. Stepura, Ukrainian Antarctic Journal, ¹1, 7-16, (2003), in Russian)
On the basis of hydrological and hydrochemical data received during the Seventh Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition (7th UAE, March, 2002) the circulation, water mass structure and spatial distribution at the Western Bransfield Strait and in the lagoon of volcanic Deception Island are obtained. Formation of the Weddell Front of the surface and deep layers and its peculiarities are discussed. Comparison of received data with the results of the previous expeditions is made. Features of hydrological and separate variables of hydrochemical structure of the Deception Island lagoon in the beginning of autumn period are shown.

Surface thermal fronts in the Southern Atlantic and its seasonal variability obtained on the basis of satellite data (Yu. Artamonov, N. Bulgakov, P. Lomakin, E. Skripaleva, A. Artamonov, S. Stanichny, Ukrainian Antarctic Journal, ¹ 2, 5-14, (2004), in Russian)
The main features of seasonal variability of the large-scale sea surface thermal fronts in the Southern Atlantic have been investigated using the SST satellite data. The comparative analysis of the specific features of the front manifestations in the western and central regions in the meridional sections along 65°, 50°, 40°, 30° and 10°W were carried out. It was shown that the fronts intensity decreases from west to east. In seasonal cycle of the fronts variability the annual harmonics are predominated. The semi-annual harmonics are found near the South America and in the eastern part of the investigated region.
