Professor Vladimir V. Efimov- Head of Atmosphere and Ocean Interaction Department

Scientists - 12; Engineers - 10; Technician - 1
At present there are 21 employees in the department including five doctors of sciences: V.V. Efimov, N.A. Timofeev, E.N. Voskresenskaya, M.V.Shokurov, A.Kh. Degterev, three candidates of sciences: A.S. Lopukhin, A.A. Sizov, Yu.P Solov'ev. and 12 research workers.

Basic scientific directions

Research of climatic variability in the ocean- atmosphere system and its regional manifestations;
Research of the processes of dynamic and thermal atmosphere - ocean interaction;
Study of turbulent structure and wave processes in the boundary layers of the atmosphere and the ocean.

Projects

• Study of the ocean role in the short-period climate fluctuations (code "The World ocean and climate of Ukraine").
• "Research of spatial variability of hydrophysical fields and processes of interaction in the ocean-atmosphere system" (code "Ocean-atmosphere");
• "Research of climate changes in the ocean-atmosphere-lithosphere system on global and regional scales" (code "Ocean-climate");
• "Development of the experimental system of control and prognosis of the wind-wave fields for the regions of oil-gas production in the north-western part of the Black Sea" (code "Ocean-oil");
• Project of the State Committee on science and technique of Ukraine "Role of the ocean in the changes of natural environment and climate";
• Project of Ministry of science and technologies of Ukraine "Research of the ocean as the energy and dynamic system of the global level with the purpose of prognosis of changes of weather, climate, navigation conditions and realization of marine technologies";
• Project of Ministry of ecology and natural resources within the framework of the Climatic program of Ukraine "Development of a numerical model and use of modern methods in research of climate of Ukraine in connection with variability in the ocean-atmosphere system";
• NATO project "Climate variability and extremal hydrometeorological events in the Eastern Europe".

In the 70ies a few modifications of a submerged gradient station (SGS) was developed in the Department. They were used to investigate small-scale atmosphere-ocean interaction in the open sea from the shipboard of a research vessel. Works with SGS were conducted within the framework of the international project "Sovfrans" ("Cofrans" ) . A stationary gradient mast was set at a distance of 300 m from the coast in the Experimental Department of Marine Hydrophysical Institute (Katsiveli). In the 70- 80ies a large amount of unique researches of small-scale interaction between the atmosphere and the ocean was performed.
The results of these researches are published in two monographs and numerous papers. Based on the materials of studies one doctoral and four candidate theses were defended.
Later and up to now the investigations of small-scale atmosphere and ocean interaction were continued on the stationary oceanographic platform (Katsiveli) and on the drilling platform in the Karkinit bay located at a distance of 70 km off the Tarkhankut cape. These researches of Air-Sea Interaction Department were accompanied by implementation of climatic programs. The results of the climatic programs served a basis for defending two doctoral and two candidate theses.
The results of these researches are used, in particular, to control and to prognoses wind-wave fields in the region of gas-oil production and to estimate recreation value of seaside resorts of the Mediterranean-Black Sea region. more information more information

Results

- vertical structure of the Reynolds wave tensions in the near-water atmosphere and the sea upper layer is studied. Contribution of wave tensions to the compound momentum flux is estimated;
- it is shown experimentally that the law of spectrum of Phillips equilibrium interval can be applied only approximately, and non-linearity of harmonics of the basic mode results in a noticeable deviation of the dispersion relation from the linear one in the area of doubled frequency of energy-carrying waves;
- the model of thermohydrodynamic layer of wave mixing is constructed. Nonlinear motion induced by heat waves is investigated;
- physical regularities of formation of solar and long-wave radiation on the ice-free surface of the World ocean are studied;
- complex of the automated instruments for satellite communication channels is developed;
- monitoring of hydrometeorological fields in the opened part of the Black Sea from the oceanographic platform in Katsiveli and from the drilling platform on the natural gas field "Golitsino" on the Black Sea north-western shelf is carried out since 1992;
- numerical model of the wind-wave prognosis for the opened part of the Black Sea with the lead time 3 days is constructed;
- regional numerical model of the atmospheric circulation adapted for territory of Ukraine is constructed. Regional numerical calculations are carried out;
- based on the analysis of variability of multi-year global and regional data studied are the processes of interaction in the ocean-atmosphere system (forming the climate in Ukraine) on seasonal, inter-annual and multi-year scales;
- methods of research and prognosis of climatic variability of hydrometeorological fields including downscaling and modern mathematical and statistical methods are developed;
- a base of global and regional hydrometeorological data including all accessible at present data arrays from the international sources and the information of routine observations on some meteorological stations of Ukraine is formed.
