NAS corresponding member

Set up on October 9, 1996.

Its main research area is scientific instrumentation.

NAS Physical Engineering Training-and-Research Center (PEC) was set up on October 10, 1996 by the NAS Presidium Resolution №329 through reorganizing the Kyiv Division of Moscow Institute for Physics and Technology (MIPT). The main task of the Center as a training-and-research institution is management and methodological support to the master’s degree courses for top-level specialists in physical engineering at higher educational institutions and its own post-graduate studies.

The PEC runs five base chairs, viz:

- the chair of theoretical cybernetics and optimum control methods (V. M. Glushkov Institute of Cybernetics, the head of the chair is NAS Acad. I. V. Sergienko) – founded in 1967;

- the chair of physical metallurgy and material science (E. O. Paton Institute of Electric Welding; the head of the chair is NAS Acad. B. E. Paton) – founded in 1982;

- the chair of quantum electronics, nonlinear optics and holography (Institute of Physics; the head of the chair is NAS Acad. M. S. Brodin) – founded in 1992;

- the chair of molecular physiology and biophysics (O. O. Bohomolets Institute of Physiology; the head of the chair is NAS Acad. P. H. Kostiuk) – founded in 1982;

- the chair of physical&technological problems of nanodimensional systems (G. V. Kurdyumov Institute for Metal Physics; the head of the chair is NAS Acad. A. P. Shpak) – founded in 1982;

Graduates of these chairs have master’s degrees in applied mathematics and physics and get MIPT diplomas.

The teaching in PEC is provided by leading scientists of the abovementioned institutions, 9 of them are NAS academicians, 9 – NAS corresponding members, 24 are doctors of science and 17 – candidates of science.

800 masters of science have graduated PEC since 1967, 221 of them have become candidates of science and 24 – doctors of science, most of them are working in NAS.

Since May 3, 1993 PEC has had in its structure a research laboratory of new methods of materials analysis, whose main focus is instrumentation and automation of scientific investigations.

The laboratory carries out pioneering studies and takes an active part in state research programs on instrumentation.

The main achievements of this laboratory are: a space ion microprobe, a system of ion sources, a range of high voltage power supplies, microprocessor systems of data acquisition and control of scientific instruments.

The Ukrainian physical engineering school by correspondence for schoolchildren has worked at PEC since November 1985. Every year about 1500 schoolchildren of 8–11 years of study from all 25 regions of Ukraine learn physics and mathematics at an advanced level.
