Set up in July 1954.
The Center is an educational and research institution working for the whole Academy, its headquarters are located in Kyiv and its branches spread over Ukraine, operating in regional science centers in the cities of Lviv, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk and Sevastopol.
The tasks of the Center as a higher educational facility of the post-graduation level are concerned, first and foremost, with teaching foreign languages to NAS post-graduate students and researchers. The Center possesses unique teaching materials and means for upgrading the linguistic competence of adult professionals of the highest level. It organizes admittance examinations in foreign languages for post-graduate-course candidates, the advanced-level training under different study programs, holds qualifying candidate-of-science-degree exams in foreign (mainly West-European) languages and in Russian and Ukrainian as second languages.
Center’s research activities are focused on typological, contrastive and translatological studies of the languages of the European-and-American linguistic area, continuing traditions of the learned school started by NAS corresponding member V. V. Akulenko.
The other line of research done by the Center is the functional and semantic description of the European languages at the levels of language systems, language norms, speech and speech activities, in particular in comparative, characterological and lingua-culturological aspects. Due attention is also given to cognitive and discourse studies.
The Center maintains post-graduate and post-doctoral courses.
The Center is the major co-founder of a specialized educational institution – Kyiv Institute of Translators and Interpreters, which provides up-to-date higher education with the major in translation and interpretation. It also gives an opportunity to those with a degree in various areas to obtain their second degree in the abovementioned subjects.
The Center is open for collaboration with various institutions engaged in research in social and applied linguistics, translatology and language teaching.
