Gennadiy G. Pivnyak,
NAS academician

Founded in June 2004 on the basis of National Mining University for deeper integration of science and higher education; organizung systemic R&D activities; introduction of resource- and energy-saving technologies in mining, metallurgical and coal industries; improving the quality of higher education.

The Institute’s activities address issues of power supply and energy conversion, development of novel electrical equipment and feeding systems that ensure efficient and safe use of power in mining, metallurgy and mechanical engineering. Its scientists carry out research into systems of transferring higher-frequency inductive power to mobile objects, thyristor charging and charging–discharging devices, power sources for mining installations and advanced energy-efficient production technologies (electrothermal treatment, multifrequency and inductive heating, using electromagnetic methods in mining, waste-water treatment with electric pulses, ozone water treatment).

Scientists of the Institute have attained new important results in innovative and resource- saving technologies in power engineering, industry and agribusiness. A range of major theoretical problems in power generation, transmission, distribution and consumption were investigated; electrical-engineering systems with high performances and economic efficiency were developed. Relying on interdisciplinary studies, Institute’s specialists developed a technology of methane production from gas-saturated coal-and-rock geological structures. They worked out new methods of earth-surface monitoring to ensure safety of mining regions. The combined operation mode for centralized and decentralized power supply systems was proposed and substantiated, which improved the efficiency of coal use in power generation. A mathematical model of electromagnetic energy absorption by objects located in the field of traction-line current was elaborated. Theoretical fundamentals were developed for programmed control of combined power source for synchronous motors used in single- and two-mass electromechanical systems with elastic linkage. The research results obtained are widely commercialized at industrial plants and mines of Ukraine. Institute’s scientists made two discoveries: ”Patterns in particulate water-saturated rock solidification under the influence of electric current” (NAS Acad. G. G. Pivnyak, Profs. V. I. Bondarenko V.I. and A. M. Zorin) and “Patterns of strength loss in iron ores due to treatment with pulsed magnetic field” (NAS Acads.G. G. Pivnyak and A. K. Shidlovskiy, Profs. S. I. Vypanasenko, V. P. Martynenko). They secured 107 patents, issued over 200 learned publications.

The Institute participates in scientific conferences and seminars hosted by National Mining University. International R&D conference “Miner’s Forum” is held annually. In the framework of ‘Energy’ Education, Research and Industrial Complex, set up in National Mining University in cooperation with high-tech industrial plants and businesses, systemic training of master’s degree candidates is provided under various training and professional programs. Under-graduate and post-graduate students are also involved in R&D activities carried out jointly with NAS institutes and organizations.
