Founded in 1949.
Main lines of Institute’s research activities are:
- developing energy- and resource-saving technologies in various sectors of the national economy on the basis of higher efficiency of natural gas use;
- developing technologies for preparation and use of alternative off-balance energy sources in transport and in power facilities of distributed heat-and-power supply;
- energy-efficient disposal of solid domestic waste, protection of atmospheric air from pollution.
Over the entire period of its activities the Institute has carried out fundamental research in applied theory of combustion, heat exchange, flow dynamics, thermochemistry, thermodynamics, kinetics and other areas in parallel with applied studies towards the development of technologies and equipment for rational and efficient use of natural gas and other fuels in industry, power engineering, transport and municipal heat-and-power engineering. The Institute has produced about 200 such developments, implemented at the enterprises of the former USSR, in Ukraine and abroad (Vietnam, USA, India, Bulgaria, Hungary, Algeria).
The most significant R&D achievements of the Institute in all years of its existence are:
- development of fundamentals of metallurgical heat engineering and technology;
- development of fundamentals of steel heat treatment;
- development of fundamentals and technology of single-flow cascade refrigeration cycle for methane liquefaction;
- development of fundamentals and technologies for using combustion products plasma in technological processes;
- development of methods to analyze gas-transport systems;
- development of the theory of and furnaces for indirect radiant heating of materials;
- the theory of complex gas system interaction with oxides and metals;
- development of fundamentals and technology of coke-free metallurgy;
- development of fundamentals, technology and production of iron powder;
- development of technology and equipment for producing carbon absorbents;
- development of technology for producing catalysts of hydrocarbon conversion;
- development of theory and technologies of agglomeration processes;
- industrial ecology and protection of atmospheric air from pollution;
- development of fundamentals and technology for producing heat-insulation materials;
- development of novel thermal equipment for oil-refining and petrochemical industries;
- development of ‘Vodoliy’ energy-efficient steam-and-gas turbine technology.
