Founded in 1947.

NAS Institute of Electrodynamics links its history to the establisment of Power Engineering Institute in 1939, whose studies in the field of improving the efficiency of electrical systems became a research priority for the Institute of Electrodynamics.

The Institute of the Electrical Engineering was set up on the basis of Power Engineering Institute in 1947. It was renamed into the Institute of Electrodynamics of the Academy of Sciences of UkrSSR in 1963. In different periods it was headed by prominent scientists: academician of AS UkrSSR V. M. Khruschov, academician S. O. Lebedev, corresponding members of AS UkrSSR A. D. Nesterenko and O. M. Milyakh. From 1973 to 2007 the Institute of Electrodynamics was led by NAS academician A. K. Shidlovsky. Since May, 2007 the director of the NAS Institute of Electrodynamics has been O. V. Kirilenko.

Principal research areas of the Institute are:

- conversion and stabilization of electromagnetic energy parameters;

- improving the efficiency and reliability of the processes of electromechanical energy conversion;

- analysis, optimization and automation of operarion modes of electrical power systems and their elements;

- information-measuring systems and metrological control in power industry.

The Institute has significant research potential. Nowadays 5 NAS academicians and 5 NAS corresponding members, 37 doctors of science and 101 candidates of science, highly skilled technicians and engineers work at the Institute.

Scientists of the Institute were awarded with 18 State Prizes, 14 G. F. Proskura, S. O. Lebedev and V. M. Khruschov prizes and an IAAS Prize. 6 Honoured Workers of Science and Technology, 2 Honoured Inventors of Ukraine work here.
