Set up on December 16, 2002.
Its principal study areas are:
- materials science of scintillation and luminescent media;
- fundamental research into the interaction of radiation and matter;
- development of technologies and nano-technologies for producing scintillation detectors and devices on their basis.
Main achievements and developments:
- Institutes scientists have developed unique technologies and produced record-setting in terms of dimensions and properties large-sized alkali-haloid, oxide and plastic scintillators, scintillation films and coatings.
- Equipment for nuclear medical diagnostics of dangerous diseases has been developed and its manufacturing arranged. Medical centers of the country operate several generations of general-purpose and specialized medical tomographic gamma-cameras for early detection of human diseases. Due to this achievement, Ukraine is among the seven developed countries in the world, where such medical facilities have been developed and produced.
- Multi-channel delivery-detection sections for digital radiographic systems of diagnostics and checks of welded joints, pipelines, metalware and nuclear power-plant equipment have been developed; produced have been systems for radiation-safety monitoring, radiation detectors for customs introscopic inspection systems (inspection of luggage, cargo, cars and trucks, sea and air containers). Hand-luggage inspection systems are widely used at customs offices of Ukraine.
- A class of special luminescent markers has been developed for the first time. These markers are anchored on cytoplasmic membranes of stem cells; fundamental experiments concerning stem cell migration in living organisms have been conducted.
