Founded on September 7, 1990.
Its primary research areas are:
- statistical theory of solids and soft matter;
- computer modelling of physical processes and evaluation of basic physical characteristics of condensed systems.
Principal research achievements and developments:
The Institute has obtained numerous significant fundamental results. These rely on novel theoretical approaches: the method of displacements and collective variables; integral equation techniques for ionic and ion-molecular systems with associative interactions; the method of approximate renormalization group transformation in the scheme of layerwise integration; multi-density formalism for association effects in liquids; the method of site operators for many-level systems and a relevant technique for calculating correlation functions; the method of symmetrized Green’s functions; the approach of generalized collective modes etc. These methods were employed in elaborating microscopic theories for compound liquids and electrolyte solutions, self-association liquids, electrolyte films and membranes, colloidal systems, quantum Bose and Fermi systems, metals and alloys, crystalline and disordered systems with strong short-range interactions, ferroelectric crystals and hydrogen-bonded systems, phase transitions, optical and deformation effects in crystals and in many other studies.
