Founded on January 1, 1995 by a joint resolution of the National Academy of Sciences and National Space Agency of Ukraine.
Principal research efforts of the Center are aimed at:
- developing novel methods and systems for remote sensing of the Earth from air-and spaceborne carriers;
- producing software to obtain remote-sensing data and their subject handling.
The teamwork of Center’s researchers and engineers, whose experience had been acquired in more than 35 years, enabled them to develop and exploit airborne, spaceborne and ground-based systems intended for remote-sensing operations. They developed and produced a number of unique radar systems, among which were the spaceborne radar of ‘Cosmos-1500/Sich-1’ satellite, ‘Analog’, ‘Analog-1’, MARS airborne multifrequency radar systems and ACRS-30 radar facility, which is in current use. These systems are intended for optimizing the techniques for efficient tackling of a broad range of practical task-oriented issues, namely, ice reconnaissance; mineral-deposit prospecting; on-line detection and monitoring of natural and man-induced disasters, hazardous weather phenomena included; for detecting oil-contaminated areas on the sea surface, ice jams on rivers, underflooded areas, river floods and waterlogging; for subsurface sensing etc.
Besides, Center’s researchers are currently working on developing novel high-resolution space- and airborne radars and are also engaged in subject processing of the remote-sensing data obtained.
Recent achievements of the Center:
- materials have been prepared towards a pilot project to build a space synthetic-aperture radar;
- methods have been developed for on-line radar diagnostics of oil spills on the sea surface in both side-looking and quasi-mirror sensing modes;
- employing АCRS-30 radar facility, field simulation and integrated fine-tuning of infrared-radar techniques has been done on a testing ground in Chernihiv oblast to detect and map underflooded soils;
- Center’s experts provided scientific backup to the flight tests of ‘Sich-1М’ spacecraft and to the acquisition of initial radar data by its on-board equipment.
