Founded in 1994.
Its main research lines are:
- plasma physics;
- controlled fusion (plasma confinement in stellarators and electromagnetic traps), problems of ITER international tokamak reactor;
- electromagnetic wave-plasma interaction, high-frequency plasma heating;
- quasi-steady-state and pulsed accelerators of plasma;
- development of diagnostic methods of high-temperature plasma;
- plasma technologies.
Principal achievements and developments:
- the only thermonuclear installations in Ukraine – ‘Uragan’ stellarators;
- a diagnostic complex for noncontacting electric-field measurements in plasma confined in toroidal magnetic systems and open-ended traps;
- systems of high-frequency heating of plasmas confined in magnetic traps (toroidal and open-ended);
- a method of material surface modification (improvement of hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance etc.) through the use of pulsed streams of gas plasma;
- high-efficiency barrier-discharge ozonizers for medicine, agriculture etc;
- test methods for materials subjected to high-level heat loads (in fusion and nuclear reactors), relying on powerful quasi-steady-state plasma streams.
