Founded on September 1, 1995.
Its main lines of research are:
- fundamental and applied studies in plasma electronics;
- advanced acceleration methods;
- creation of beam- and beam-plasma technologies.
Major achievements and developments:
- A series of powerful microwave generators of regular and stochastic electromagnetic oscillations and novel types of accelerating facilities have been developed; they combine advantages of conventional vacuum structures and plasma systems and are based on beam-plasma instability, discovered by Institute’s researchers. New types of beam-plasma generators and amplifiers with pulse power of over 100 kW and high efficiency have been produced.
- Advanced acceleration concepts, based on excitation of high-amplitude accelerating fields in plasma and other media by intense electron bunches and ultra-short laser pulses, have been developed.
- A new branch of charged-particle acceleration physics and technology, relying on modified phase-alternating focusing, has been proposed, theoretically validated and proved experimentally. This has ensured a further development of high-current accelerators for implementation of environmentally appropriate radiation technologies in Ukraine, creating sources of high-power neutrons, which are to be the basis for safe and environment-friendly energy production and be used to burn off radioactive waste.
- A novel type of high-current ion induction accelerator has been developed due to Institute’s theoretical and experimental research. These studies have contributed to a cycle of works awarded the 2007 State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology.
- The ЛУМЗІ-10 linear multicharged-ion accelerator has been put into operation after renovation. Fundamental and applied studies are carried out on it; among them is determination of radiation characteristics of structural materials under basic and transient modes of fuel elements operation in water-moderated reactors, as well as creation of nuclear membranes.
