Founded on January 4, 1996.
Fundamental and applied research is carried out in the following areas:
- geochemistry and cosmochemistry;
- sources of raw materials for nuclear energy;
- management of industrial and domestic waste;
- technogenic and environmental safety, civilian defence.
Principal achievements and developments of the Institute are:
- Environmental risks due to the impacts of Chornobyl accident have been assessed and strategic decisions towards further mitigation of their environment damage proposed.
- Mechanisms for decontaminating man-made and natural objects, mechanisms of ecosystems' self-purification, forecasting models of radioecological situation on polluted territories have been determined.
- Potential radiological hazards of radioactive waste concentrated in Chornobyl exclusion zone have been estimated and strategic decisions concerning hazards minimization proposed.
- Potential suitable areas and geological formations have been identified for the burial of short-lived radioactive waste in surface depots and long-lived radioactive waste in underground geological depots.
- An integrated program has been developed for radioactive waste management in the period of Chornobyl NPP decommissioning and tranforming the 'Ukryttia' ('Shelter') facility into an environmentally appropriate system.
- Geochemical processes that control the rate of natural decontamination of the environment have been identified and evolution dynamics of radioactive environment after major nuclear accidents determined.
- The evolution of uranium ore formation in the Precambrian period of the Ukrainian Shield has been investigated and the possibility of discovering high-grade and complex uranium ores on its territory substantiated;
- New types of cosmic matter have been discovered and studied.
- Screener automated system for spectromenry of human internal radiation has been developed and patented in Ukraine.
- A vehicle-borne aerogramme complex for remote radiation monitoring has been developed and used in ecological monitoring;
- "PRS-Vector" portable workstation for integrated environment monitoring has been developed and patented in Ukraine.
