The Institute carries out research in the following main areas:

- physical and engineering problems, control, power supply and development of maglev transport systems and facilities;

- problems of mechanics and aerodynamics of maglev vehicles and trains;

- design and operation of high-energy power supply for maglev transport.

The Institute of Transport Systems and Technologies is a leading organization in Europe in terms of research and development of high-speed maglev transport with electrodynamic suspension, which can move near the ground surface with a speed of 300-800 kmph. Scientists of the Institute have identified a route for maglev transport in Ukraine. Elements of transport vehicle and track structure such as superconducting magnets, linear synchronous motors, means of onboard power supply, control systems etc. have been developed.

R&D efforts towards effective environment-friendly independent power sources for transport vehicles have brought practical result in starting domestic accumulator industry. Relying on the engineering solutions and scientific supervision provided by Institute’s researchers, three plants for producing accumulators (which are among the best in Europe) and a factory for recycling lead from spent accumulators have been constructed in Dnipropetrovsk. That way novel types of accumulators and advanced technologies for their production have been developed.

Independent technologically integrated power complexes with the capacity of up to 30 kw, relying on solar and wind energy, have been constructed. The Institute is the coordinator of the innovative project ‘Development and production of novel independent integrated systems for power supply, employing solar and wind power systems and accumulators’. The Institute has been authorized to develop conceptual lines of the project, to conduct research and provide scientific backup to the production.

Within the framework of studies towards diagnostics and improvement of the functional state of operators of hazardous professions, including crews of maglev vehicles, a new phenomenon of chiral resonance – the concurrent direction of the rotational component of a magnetic field with the corresponding characteristics of biological molecule chirality – has been discovered (discovery registration № 356).
