Established on November 30, 1918.
Primary research lines of the Institute are:
- mechanics of composite and inhomogeneous media;
- mechanics of shell systems;
- mechanics of coupled fields in materials and structure members;
- mechanics of fractures and fatigue;
- dynamics and motion stability of mechanical systems.
The Institute of Mechanics was founded by the outstanding scientist S. P. Timoshenko. The M. M. Bogolyubov M. M. Krylov world-famous science school in nonlinear mechanics originated here.
Recent achievements of the Institute in mechanics of solids and general mechanics have won international recognition.
In 2007, the Gold Star International Prize was awarded to the Institute by the Kremlin Foundation (Moscow, Russia).
The European Academy of Sciences (Brussels, Belgium) awarded the Blaise Pascal Medal in the field of materials science to NAS academician O. M. Guz in 2007.
