- studies of the literary process in Western Ukraine (ХIХ–ХХ сent.) and Ukrainian emigrant literature (ХХ сent.) in the all-Ukrainian cultural context;
- slavic studies (of the Polish, Russian, Serbian and Croatian literatures);
- compararive literature studies;
- literary criticism.
Main achievements and developments:
Nearly 50 books have been published, in particular in «I. Franko studies», «Literary studies», «Literary portraits», «Literary sights», «Bibliographic studies», «Literary criticism and essays» series.
Preparation (with comments) of four additional volumes and a reference volume to the “Collected Works by I Franko” in 50 volumes has been completed. Vol. 51 contains prose translations, vol. 52 – original poetic works and translations, vols. 53 and 54 – literature and ethnographic studies, and journalistic writings. ‘Naukova Dumka’ Publishers has completed pre-publication work with these volumes and the reference volume.
Lviv Branch’s researchers are working at “I. Franko Encyclopaedia” in 5 volumes (the chairman of its editorial board is Mykola Zhulynsky, his deputy is Ye. Nakhlik). This is planned as a literature encyclopaedia. Five volumes are to be prepared: I – «Ivan Franko: Ukrainian literature»; II – «Ivan Franko: Foreign Literatures»; III – «Ivan Franko: Poetic Works. Mythological, Folklore and Traditional Literary Characters»; V – «Ivan Franko: Theoretical and Literary Aspects of Creative Work».
