The NAS Institute of the Ukrainian language started its work as an independent Academy institution on October 16, 1991, being founded on the basis of Ukrainian-study departments of NAS O. O. Potebnya Institute of Linguistics.
The activities of the Institute are focused on studying:
- the current state of the Ukrainian language: its lexicon, grammatical system, standardization and codification;
- social, professional and territorial differentiation of the Ukrainian language;
- formation of the Ukrainian language and its historical development;
- development of Ukrainian terminological subsystems;
-forming and dynamics of onomastic system of Ukraine;
-Ukrainian language ties with other Slavic and non-Slavic languages in different temporal profiles.
Among the most important recent achievements of the Institute of Ukrainian language are the following scholarly works: Atlas of the Ukrainian Language (its authors were awarded the 2006 State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology), Dialects of Chornobyl Zone (1996, 1999), The Ukrainian Language. Encyclopedia (2000; 2004; 2007), Peresopnitsa Gospel 15561561: Study, Transliterated Text (2001), Problems of Ukrainian Spelling by V. V.Nimchuk (2002), Dictionary of Phraseologisms of the Ukrainian Language (2003), UkrainianRussian Dictionary of Science Terminology (2004), Argot, Jargon, Slang by L. O. Stavytska (2005), Ukrainian Linguostylistics of XX Early XXICenturies (2007), continued publications Studies in Onomastics and Etymology (20022007), Ukrainian Terminology and Today (19961998; 2001; 2003; 2005; 2007) etc.
The NAS Institute of the Ukrainian Language collaborates with academy linguistic institutions of all Slavic countries and Germany in the framework of a joint research project General Slavic Linguistic Atlas (10 volumes have been published and the work is going on).
The Institute issues Ukrainian language quarterly, there also are semi-annual publications Word Culture, Lexicography Bulletin and Dialectology Bulletin. The Institute hosts Ukrainian language academic council and a specialized academic board for awarding candidate-of-science and doctor-of-science degrees in speciality 10.02.01. the Ukrainian language.
