The Institute was founded in June 1951 as the Institute of Social Studies of the Academy of Sciences of the UkrSSR. On January 20, 1993, on the initiative of its researchers, the name was changed to NAS I. Krypiakevych Institute of Ukrainian Studies.
It is a research institution with the focus on interdisciplinary studies in humanities. Its structure facilitates engaging specialists in various areas of humanities to the studies of integral issues of Ukrainian history and culture in the European and global contexts.
Current research areas:
- studies of historical and cultural heritage as a factor forming ethnic and national consciousness; studying in these terms the literature process and the progress of socio-political and philisophical ideas;
- studies of the history of socio-political and national-liberation movements in Western Ukraine in the context of all-Ukrainian and European socio-economic, political, cultural and ethno-denominational processes;
- description and analysis of historical and dialect vocabulary; the use of lexicographical studies in solving historical and cultural problems;
- integral archaeological studies of material and spiritual culture of the early population of Sub-Carpathian and Volhynian territory;
Major research results of the Institute are:
- numerous discoveries of archaeological artifacts in Sub-Carpathian and Volhynian region, which considerably extended and deepened the knowledge about population and culture of this region from the earliest times to the Middle Ages;
- joint studies of archaeologists, historians and art scholars, resulting in summarizing publications on the history and culture of Galician and Volhynian Principality, its role in the development of Ukrainian lands in the Middle Ages in Ukrainian and European contexts;
- historians, philologists and philosophers generalized the processes of national revival in Western Ukraine in ХІХ and ХХ centuries, formation of national ideology and organizational and political basis of Ukrainian national movement, its different political trends, alongside with relations with European socio-political trends and movements in the struggle for implementing national programs, creatiing the basis of Ukrainian state system, in particular, the West-Ukrainian People’s Republic;
- the gathering and publication of documents concerning the radical trend of national movement (OUN and UPA) and anti-totalitarian resistance of Ukrainian intelligentsia has been started. The documents collected also help analyze the establishment and functioning of the Soviet communist regime;
- linguistic studies reproducing the historical and dialect vocabulary of the Ukrainian language; those were published in multi-volume “Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language of XVI – the first half of XVII century” (13 issues); 3-volume “Atlas of the Ukrainian Language” etc.
