Established on April 25, 1991.
Main study areas of the Institute are: archaeography, early text studies, world history.
The Institue is entrusted with the task of systematic and purposeful detection, study and publishication of documents and mementoes of written historical&cultural heritage, i.e. creating a kind of fundamental historical-source encyclopaedia of the Ukrainian people; coordination and provision of scholarly&methodological supervision to archaeographic work of other research, educational and culturological institutions in Ukraine; elaboration of theoretical and methodological issues of today’s archaeography and early text studies.
