NAS Institute of History of Ukraine is a research institution studying a wide range of issues of national history. It was set up in 1936.
The Institute is currently undertaking research in the following areas:
- theoretical issues of the world historical process; the general concept of the world and Ukrainian history; methods of historical studies and special historical disciplines;
- early and medieval history of Ukraine; Ukraine in the XVII–XIX centuries;
- history of Ukraine in the XX century;
- ethnic history; national revival of the Ukrainian nation; current national and ethno-cultural processes; religion and church in Ukraine.
- history and topical issues of international relations; Ukraine in the all-European and world socio-historical processes.
In the last decade, the Institute of the History of Ukraine produced significant scholarly results, in particular: analyzed was the role and place of Ukraine in the all-European and world historical contexts all along the previous millenium of the national history; the phenomenon of Ukrainian Cossaks was studied; the genesis and evolution of the Ukrainian national idea was studied, its practical implementation was traced in the events of the National Revolution of 1648–1676, the epoch of the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917–1921 and today’s nation development. Among major achievements of the Institute are: a two-volume collection of documents “Ukrainian Tsentralna Rada” (1996–1997); a two-volume edition “Everything about Ukraine” (1998), “Essays on the History of Ukrainian Diplomacy” (2001); “Kyiv: Encyclopaedic Edition” (2001); a collection of documents “Ukrainian National-Liberation Movement, March – November 1917” (2003); “Ukrainian Culture of the Second Half of XVII – XVIII Centuries” (vol. 3 of the 5-volume “History of the Ukrainian Culture” (2003) etc.
