Established on July 3, 1992.
The Branch is the leading research center of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in the field of history and cultures of Byzantium and the coordinator of oriental studies on the territory of Crimea.
Its principal achievements are publications of year-books “Materials in Taurian Archeology, History and Ethnography” (issues I–XIII) and collections of learned papers “Bosporus Studies” (issues I–XX). The papers contributed by Branch researchers address a wide range of subjects related to various aspects of Bizantium history and archaeology, as well as the influence of Oriental civilizations on the history and culture of peoples living in the south of Ukraine.
