Set up on May 23, 1991.
The principal tasks of the Center are:
fundamental and applied research to get new knowledge in monument studies and protection of Ukrainian cultural heritage; preparing draft normative documents and methodological recommendations concerning protection and use of cultural legacy monuments. The Center holds scholarly expeditions to detect and examine history and culture mementoes, develops systemic principles of their popularization, organizes education of people in terms of preservation and revival of the historical and cultural heritage of Ukraine, with a view to providing methodological assistance to the ministries and agencies concerned, and mass media. The Center studies and summarizes the experience of institutions and organizations engaged in preservation, use and restoration of mementoes of history and culture; provides scholarly and methodological supervision and control over the process; gives scholarly and methodological support to organizing museum expositions; prepares and issues scholarly, scholarly&methodological and popular publications on preservation and use of cultural legacy. Center’s applied studies and its practical activities aim at protection, preservation and restoration of mementoes of cultural heritage. Research results of the Center for Monument Studies as the only learned organization of the type in Ukraine are implemented in the activities of state and non-governmental organizations involved in cultural heritage protection.
Major achievements of the Center:
- A new research area, officially recognized by the Higher Certifying Commission of Ukraine (an order of May 29, 2006 № 263), – ‘monument studies’ (code 17.00.08.) was started.
- A wide circle of scholars is engaged to addressing the issues of preserving and popularizing the cultural legacy of Ukraine.
- Preparing and publishing monographs, collected academic writings that present studies of Ukrainian cultural heritage.
- Improving the activities and extending the network of organizations engaged in cultural heritage protection, museums in particular.
Due to participating in the work of Verkhovna rada commissions on preparing draft laws of Ukraine on cultural heritage, the Center got the classification of cultural legacy objects improved and their number enlarged.
Jointly with the Ukrainian Association for Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments, the Center publishes the “Echo of Ages” magazine (2 issues annually). It has started serial editions: “Proceedings of the National Center for Monument Studies” (2 issues per year), “Nizhin Aantiquity” (2 issues per year), yearbooks “Ukrainian Engineering Museum: History, Experience, Prospects”, “Topical Issues of the History of Engineering“, “New Studies of Cossack Mementoes in Ukraine”, magazine “Questions of the History of Science and Engineering” (4 issues annually).
