Founded on February 22, 2002.
Principal research areas:
- studying biodiversity in the Dnieper-Buh estuary area as an element of the South Ukrainian (seaside-steppe) green corridor and developing recommendations on its preservation and restoration;
- research into the environment state of the Dnieper-Buh estuary area under anthropogenic pollution and its effect on the environment state of the Black Sea shelf.
Station’s researchers carry out studies of hydrological, hydrochemical and hydrobiological regimes of the Dnieper-Buh estuary area. New data have been obtained concerning qualitative and quantitative diversity of bacterial, phyto-, and zooplankton, macrozoobenthos, higher aquatic vegetation in the main channel of the Dnieper, the Dnieper-Buh estuary, some flood plains. Ichthyological research has determined peculiarities of the growth and development of young and mature fish in estuaries with various trophic characteristics, as well as the structure of feeding and spawning schools.
Scientific and methodological recommendations have been developed towards recovery of aquatic ecosystems, improved living conditions for hydrobionts and natural fish reproduction in the Lower Dnieper.
The Station organizes and holds international (in 2004, 2006, 2008) and national (in 2003) hydrobiology conferences; it also publishes research proceedings.
