Director
Vitaly A. Ivanov,
NAS corresponding member

Set up in 1929.

Its main research lines are:

- integrated interdisciplinary studies of the basic processes of formation and evolution of ecosystems in the Black Sea, the Sea of Azov and other strategic areas of the World Ocean;

- fundamental and applied physical-and-climatic research of marine environment;

- developing methods and means of on-line oceanography; elaborating advanced information technologies and systems for gathering, processing, analyzing and using oceanological data.

Major achievements of the Institute:

- A fully automated multifunctional marine prediction system has been introduced into operational testing.

- A marine hydro-meteorological station has been cooperatively produced by NAS Marine Hydrophysical Institute and Hydro-Meteorological Center of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea; it is equipped with ‘Breeze’ marine near-shore hydro-meteorological station. The station was developed by the Institute and passed official tests.

- A scientifically validated procedure of integral assessment of beach areas as recreational sites has been implemented.

- A deep-water metering system for measuring dissolved hydrogen sulphide has been developed; it determines precise spatial distribution of dissolved hydrogen sulphide in the depth range from 0 to 2000 m.

- The numerical model of bottom hypoxia and fish suffocation on the north-west shelf of the Black Sea was modified, taking into account discontinuous jet methane sources, to estimate their effect on the duration and intensity of hypoxia and suffocation on the north-west shelf.
