The principal research trends of the Institute are:
- studies of deep structure, tectonics, structure, geodynamics of continental and ocean lithosphere with the methods of geophysics (seismics, gravimetry, magnetometry and electrometry), to predict the presence of mineral deposits;
- development of theory, methods, equipment, automated systems for providing geophysical research and for treatment and interpretation of the results obtained;
- geophysical environmental research to study and prognosticate seismic hazards and other dangerous natural phenomena;
- studies of fundamentals of nonlinear nonequilibrium geophysics and their use to develop novel technologies and equipment for intensifying energy resource production.
Projects of the Institution proposed for joint introduction:
- automated systems for integral interpretation of geophysical data;
- integrated geodynamic models of tectonosphere of intermediate zones from Eurasia and North America to the Pacific and seismogenic zones of the Pacific margin and Crimea;
- a regional earthquake index for the Alpine folded zone;
- a database and an atlas of isoseismal lines for strong earthquakes of the Vrancea region; regional epicenter maps of the Carpathian region;
- a density model of the lithosphere for Europe;
- a three-dimensional P-velocity model of the mantle of Eurasia;
- a technology to intensify liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons extraction from subterranian formations;
- expertise and inspection on using explosion techniques in the economy;
- seismic microdivisibility of urban territories of Ukraine; determining engineering&seismic conditions for construction sites, facilities of high environmental hazard (NPPs, hydropower plants, hydro-engineering structures, chemical and military plants);
- analysis of seismic hazards in Kyiv and its relation to engineering&geological conditions of the megapolis; recommendations towards controlling current activity of hazardous geological processes in large cities (taking Kyiv as an example);
- a concept of geological&geophysical monitoring to develop a system for monitoring engineering&geological and geodynamic activity within the historical center of Kyiv; it is used today in preserving monuments of ‘Sofia Kyivska’ National Reserve;
- a poly-probe device of neutron logging to determine petrophysical parameters of collector rocks;
- advanced digital hardware-software complexes for seismic monitoring of seismically active territories;
- DOBRE-2 seismic studies along ‘Mariupol–Feodosia–Black Sea’ line. Their results will be used to estimate the prospects of oil and gas presence in the Azov–Black Sea region.
