Established in 1934 on the basis of Commission for studying industrial forces of Ukraine, which was set up in 1919 by academician V. I. Vernadsky, its first head.
Basic research lines:
- theoretical and methodological issues and elaboration of conceptual principles of the development and distribution of productive forces in Ukraine;
- theoretical and practical issues of socio-economic and R&D progress of Ukraine and its regions;
- reproduction processes in Ukrainian economy and its regions; in particular, issues of human development (including demographic ones), living standards, poverty elimination, labour potential, employment and labour market, social sphere, branch problems of economic complex of Ukraine in the context of sustainable development concept;
- scientific validation of environmentally admissible levels of human-induced impacts on landscapes;
- research into scientific principles of ensuring population safety and economy stability in Ukraine in case of possible major industrial accidents, catastrophes and natural disasters.
Main research results of the Council:
- a long-term forecast of the development and distribution of productive forces in Ukraine;
- a long-term scheme (forecast) of the development and distribution of productive forces in Ukraine and its regions (oblasts);
- schemes (forecasts) of the development and distribution of productive forces in regions (oblasts) of Ukraine till 2015;
- a strategy for ensuring productive employment in conditions of economy modernization;
- a strategy for the development of Ukrainian industry;
- social progress strategy;
- economic area and dynamics of the development of productive forces in Ukraine;
- research into modernization of the national economy in the context of global sustainable development trends.
