Founded on May 8, 1986.
Its primary study areas are:
- theory of chemical structure and reactivity of solid surface: research into the nature of active centres, adsoprtion mechanisms, chemical reactions and other transformations in the surface layer;
- medico-biological and biochemical problems of surface: the interaction of disperse materials with bioactive molecules in supramolecular structures, copolymers, membranes and microorganisms;
- physico-chemistry of surface phenomena: collective interactions in ensembles of particles, quantum-dimensional effects in nanostructures, phase transitions in ultradisperse systems, interaction between electromagnetic radiation and matter;
- technologies for producing nanomaterials, including those based on oxide and carbonaceous systems, their modified forms and composites.
Major achievement and developments:
Main achievements of the Institute cover both new fundamental knowledge in the field of solid-surface chemistry, physics and technology and its practical application. The Institute has achieved significant success in chemical modification of solid surface, development of new materials based on highly dispersed oxides. These materials are widely used in various areas of domestic and foreign economies. The latest developments include: ‘Silics’ enterosorbent; ‘Silar’ lubricant; sorbents for removal of petroleum spills, petroleum products and their structural forms; mobile and stationary radiotransparent coatings; materials absorbing SHF radiation; sound- and heat-insulating materials etc.
