Founded on May, 1971.
Main lines of its activities are: providing scientific back-up to solving top-priority problems in Southern Ukraine; promoting fundamental science and applied research; active participation in ensuring innovation development for socio-economic and economic issues of Southern region.
Major achievements: The Center has succeded in involving leading scientists, regardless their affiliation, to dealing with complex regional R&D tasks. It has become possible due to close interaction between such institutions as the Council of the Heads of Higher Educational Institutions of Odessa, Mykolayiv and Kherson oblasts, Council of Industrial Science Leaders of Odessa oblast, Odessa Department of Ukrainian R&D Societies and others, as well as state administrations of those three oblasts.
At the turn of ХХ-ХХI centuries such approach allowed the nation to make the best decisions concerning such major projects as constructing a nuclear heat-and-power plant in Odessa oblast, Berezovsky chemical plant of mineral fertilizers, constructing the Danube–Dniester–Dnieper irrigating system, Odessa petroleum terminal, complexes for chemical products transit in sea ports Pivdenny, Illichivsk etc.
Since the beginning of the new millennium the Southern Science Center, with the assistance of NAS A. V. Bogatsky Physico-Chemical Institute, has contributed to the improvement of the quality of drinking water supplied to Odessa residents. It has became possible due to wide introduction of local water-treatment facilities.
In 2000 a group of scientific experts made valuable conclusions concerning the environmental state of the Sasik lake in Odessa oblast.
The integrated program for further development of infrastructure and economic activities on Zmiyiny Island and continental shelf was initiated and developed by the Center. The program has gained the national status. Now it is sucsessfully implemented under the Government control.
For the past 3 years the Southern Science Center has developed regional projects included to state ecological programs.
Now, Southern Science Center gives special attention to regional innovative processes. The Centre monitors, accumulates, distributes and offers research developments to potential investors, organizations, regardless their affiliation. The Сenter promotes initiatives towards creating technology parks, techology poles etc.
Taking into account the importance of the potential of educational institutions in the region, the Centre, through its Council, assists the process of integrating science (both academy and educational), creating educational–research–production complexes, branches and chairs in academy institutions. The educational–research–production complex of the NAS A. V. Bogatsky Physico-Chemical Institute and Odessa I. I. Mechnikov National University is an example of such coooperation.
