Pridniprovsky (before 1981 – Dnipropetrovsky) Science Center was established in 1971 to coordinate activities of research institutions subordinated to the Academy of Sciences of UkrSSR, universities, other research organizations in undertaking studies of significant value for social, economic and cultural development of Pridniprovsky region (Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhya and Kirovograd oblasts).

Well-known scientists directed the work of the Center: academicians Zot I. Nekrasov (1971–1978), Valentin M. Poturayev (1978–1985). Since 1985 the Head of the Center has been NAS academician Victor V. Pilipenko.

In October 1990 Pridniprovsky Science Center was given the status of legal entity, research organization under the Academy of Sciences of UkrSSR (NAS Presidium resolution of October 17, 1990 №267). Lev D. Chumakov, Dr. Eng., was appointed its Director.

Pridniprovsky Science Center is a state-financed non-profit-making research institution that aims the efforts of the scientists of the Pridniprovsiy region of Ukraine, regardless their research speciality and affiliation, at solving integral regional problems, mainly of interdisciplinary nature, and invites specialists from other regions for those tasks.

Pridniprovsky Science Center focuses its activities on priority lines of dealing with topical regional problems, which are approved jointly by NAS and MES of Ukraine and are coordinated with local power bodies.

The following priority research areas have been approved for the Center:

- preserving and restoring the natural environment of Pridniprovia;

- integrated utilization and saving of mineral, energy and secondary resources;

- improving the operation efficiency of mining and metallurgy complex of the region through developing and introducing novel equipment and advanced technologies;

- developing high-efficiency equipment and technologies; conversion in mechanical engineering.

Major achievements and results:

The following programs and concepts have been worked out: the Concept of the socio-economic development of Pridniprovia region, the Concept of energy efficiency in Dnipropetrovsk oblast, the Integrated program of energy efficiency in Dnipropetrovsk oblast till 2010, the Program of using secondary resources, mathematical models of operating complex engineering systems, the Concept of socio-economic development of Dnipropetrovsk oblast till 2011, the Concept of the state program of liquidating ecological and radiation emergencies, and social securiry of Dniprodzerzhinsk inhabitants.
