V.
V. Nemoshkalenko,
The year 2001 witnessed an
event that laid the foundation for further improvements in publishing academic
periodicals. That was the reorganization of the Specialized Printing House
into the «Academ-periodika» Publishing House. The principal tasks of the
Publishing House are to publish, print and circulate newly founded NAS
journals and their electronic versions and to provide editorial staffs
of the periodicals functioning within NAS institutions with printing services
and advice.
In the year under review,
NAS institutions published over 660 academic books, 440 monographs and
more than 200 collected research works being among them. In the first year
of its activities, 'Academperiodica' Publishing House issued 7 monographs.
Among them one should mention monographs "Physico-Chemical Kinetics in
Nanostructure Systems" by NAS academician V.V.Skorokhod, I.V.Uvarova and
A.V.Ragulya; "Cluster and Nanostructure Materials" by NAS academician A.P.Shpak,
Yu.A.Kunitsky and L.V.Karbovsky; "Problems of Conserving and Renewing Biodiversity
in Ukraine" by NAS academician D.M.Grodzinsky et al. In 2001 the printing
shop of the Publishing House printed 85 issues of academic journals, 23
monographs, 11 volumes of collected writings.
The activities of the 'Naukova
Dumka' publishers were aimed at issuing fundamental generalizing editions,
academic monographs and literature for students and pupils. Two volumes
of a unique edition that had no parallels since the time of the first printer
Ivan Fyodorov - "History of the Ukrainian Culture" appeared in 2001. The
"History of Ukrainian Culture" was named the best book of the year by the
VIII Forum of publishers in Lviv. Among fundamental academic editions one
should mark such books: "Ukraine: Experience and Problems of State Formation"
by NAS corresponding member V.M.Litvin (The Institute of History of Ukraine);
"Technogenic and Environmental Safety Management within the Sustainable
Development Paradigm" by NAS corresponding member S.I.Doroguntsov and O.M.Ralchuk
(The Council on Study of Ukraine Productive Forces). In the second half
of the year, the Publishers undertook the 'Academic Book' project. Under
it, three books of the total volume 64 publisher's sheets were published
and now 14 titles of 327-sheet volume are being prepared. In 2001, 'Naukova
Dumka' Publishers issued 72 books of the total volume of 1998 sheets and
283,7 thousand copies circulation.
The role of other publishing
houses in issuing works by NAS scholars remains significant. In general,
257 monographs by NAS researchers of the total volume nearly 5300 registered
sheets were published at different publishing houses.
One should mark separately
the writings by Ukrainian scientists published by leading foreign publishers.
Works of researchers of the B.I.Verkin Physico-Technical Institute of Low
Temperatures were issued at 'Gordon and Breach Science Publishers' -"Geometry
of Submanifold" by Yu.A.Aminov and at 'Begel House Inc.' - «Plasticity
and Elasticity of Cryocrystals" by A.I.Prokhvatilov. 'Kluwer Academic Publishers'
issued "Multielement System Design in Astronomy and Radio Science" - a
joint work of researchers of the O. Ya.Usikov Institute of Radiophysics
and Electronics and the Radioastronomy Institute, a monograph "Attachment
Devices of Insect Cuticle" by S.N.Gorb (the I.I.Shchmalhauzen Institute
of Zoology), and a monograph "Solvability Theory of Boundary Value Problems
and Singular Integral Equations with Shift" by H.S.Litvinchuk (Hydroacoustics
Department of the Marine Hydrophysical Institute). In total, in 2001 foreign
publishing houses issued 33 monographs of Ukrainian scholars of the total
volume 570 registered sheets.
Today, a considerable amount
of literature is published by the institutes themselves at their on-line
printing sectors, they issued 124 monographs of the total volume 2130 registration
sheets in 2001. The V.I.Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine published
"Peresopnitsia Gospel (1556-1561): Studies. Transliterated Text. Word Index".
The Institute of Political and Ethnonational Studies issued the book "Conciliarism
and Regionalism in Ukrainian State Formation (1917-1920)" by V.F.Soldatenko
and NAS academician I.F.Kuras.
Current works of researchers
are published in 75 journals and nearly 40 series editions of the NAS of
Ukraine. Foreign publishers translate 21 journals. Unfortunately, due to
financial problems, 'Gordon and Breach Science Publishers' stopped translation
and circulation of three journals "Geofizicheskiy Zhurnal", "Metallofizika
i Noveishiye Tekhnologii", "Electronnoe Modelirovaniye".
